Description

The Botanical Garden of Gondremer is a private garden that has existed since 1975. In a secluded setting, in the middle of the forest, across two hectares, 3,500 plants grow around several pools and along little trails.
It benefits from the climate of Lorraine, which is subcontinental. Situated in an east-to-west valley, it is protected from the north wind by wooded hills. The soil is rich in humus, with a pH of 5.5, meaning that it is acidic.
These conditions, combined with the climate, are favourable to growing heath plants–a speciality of this garden. Indeed, out of the 3,500 plants currently growing here, half belong to the Ericaceae family. From this family, the garden features rhododendrons (botanical and hybrid species: over 1,000 varieties, including azaleas) and kalmias. To a lesser extent, heathers (Calluna and Erica), Pieris, Leucothoe, Enkianthus and others are also found.
Its collections of rhododendrons, kalmia and Japanese maples are exceptional and have been recognised as “National Collections” by the CCVS (French Conservatory of Specialised Plant Collections).
Other remarkable collections include conifers, hydrangeas, magnolias, daylilies, hostas and water lilies. The garden also boasts many rare and remarkable trees. A self-guided tour can be followed to discover about fifty of them.
Spring, during flowering (between late April and early June) and autumn, when green gives way to colours ranging from yellow to purple (from late September to late October), are two ideal seasons for visiting. The rest of the year, the garden also offers a haven of peace for visitors seeking tranquillity and nature, and for botanical enthusiasts.
